An air of madness floats over New York

On Easter Sunday, the quirky madness of the Easter Parade takes over New York's legendary Fifth Avenue. Have fun watching New Yorkers pass by in their traditional flamboyant costumes and bonnets as part of this great Easter procession. The parade starts at around 10:00 a.m. from 49th Street, then climbs up Fifth Avenue before reaching 57th Street at about 4:00 p.m. Find yourself a spot by Saint Patrick's Cathedral and you will not miss a second of the show. Make sure you get there early as the event is hugely popular with locals and passing visitors alike. Watch in amazement as uninhibited residents vie to outdo each other with their fantastical attire.

Headgear takes on every imaginable form from floral compositions and Mary Poppins-style teacups to stylised eggs and creations inspired by US pop culture. Other paraders wear Civil War costumes or carry their dressed-up dogs in Easter baskets… This sartorial tradition goes back to the 1870s when elegant ladies showed off their finest hats and dresses while decking out their churches in flowers. Over the years, this procession has lost all restraint to the point of becoming totally crazy. What a wonderful way to celebrate Easter!

Exuberant floral compositions and giant Easter eggs

The Big Apple certainly knows how to put on a party at Easter. To celebrate spring in style, head to Macy's Herald Square. A flower show featuring blooms from all over the world turns the basement of this great store into a magical garden. You will not believe your eyes as you stroll past flower arrangements and spectacular sculptures.

As you walk up Sixth Avenue, your eyes fixed on the soaring skyscrapers above, you will come to the Rockefeller Center, the famous commercial landmark with its clean lines. At the bottom of and inside the Comcast Building, an Easter garden carries you off to a fairy-tale world of flower and plant sculptures in the shape of giant multi-coloured rabbits and eggs. In the United States, it is the tradition that the Easter Bunny brings chocolates and sweets for children in his wicker basket.

Spring is in the air in Central Park and on the High Line

If it is warm enough, enjoy the return of fine days and take a picnic in Central Park. New Yorkers love to soak up the sun on the vast lawns of Sheep Meadow. To escape the crowds, push on up to Great Hill, a wooded area in the northern section of the park, where you will find a table for your open-air lunch. Afterwards, take a walk to the eastern side and admire the flowering cherry trees.

Spurred on by the bright sunshine, you decide to head to Gansevoort Street where you will find another perfect spot for a walk, away from the urban hustle and bustle. Welcome to the famous High Line, New York's most fabulous elevated park. Fill your lungs with fresh air as you take a relaxing stroll along this two-kilometre green walkway. To your left, the horizon opens out over the Hudson River and its docks. To your right, a cityscape lifted from the movies runs from the Meatpacking District to the Midtown skyline. At this time of year, wild gardens teeming with birds and insects are an explosion of multi-coloured flowers. Breathe in their fragrance and enjoy this spectacle of nature.

Gourmet delights in Koreatown

Another world lies between Fifth and Sixth Avenues: Koreatown, also known as K-Town, New York's bustling Korean neighbourhood. It comes alive in April with its shops and bright signs in Korean script, making it the liveliest 250-metre stretch of sidewalk in Manhattan. It may only occupy a few blocks, but it dishes up a huge selection of restaurants, bars, karaoke clubs and grocery stores overflowing with Korean goodies – you could almost be in Seoul. The wild New York of the Easter Parade seems to go on a little longer in this part of town.

The district has more than its fair share of excellent eateries. For a meal on the go, head to Food Gallery 32. You will be spoiled for choice in this multi-cultural food market. Spread out over three floors, unpretentious stands lure you in with their many tempting specialities. In keeping with your surroundings, celebrate the delights of Korean cuisine – it is said to be one of the healthiest in the world.

Next up, you set your sights on Kobeque where you enjoy a bibimbap, a classic dish with a mix of rice, minced beef, sautéed vegetables and a fried egg, seasoned with spicy sauces. Delish!

If you want to experience the ultimate dining sensation in K-Town, it is worth booking a table at Gaonnuri. On the 39th floor of a building overlooking Broadway, this restaurant not only reaches the heights of the Manhattan skyline but the heights of fine dining too. It all makes for a decidedly inspiring springtime in the heart of New York.
